What is Microfiber?

Power Threads™ microfiber from CTA is THE choice for furniture, fine collectibles, lamps, TV's, computer screens, automobile interiors and exteriors, and jewelry - anything that you want to clean safely, effectively and completely. Here's why...

Microfiber consists of very fine threads made of two polymers - polyester and polyamide (nylon) - that combine to form a single thread. Polyester is lyophillic, which means it attracts oil. Grease and oil adhere directly to the fibers. Polyamide is hydrophilic, so it attracts water. As a result, dirt and liquids are removed quickly and completely with microfiber, leaving a sparkling-clean, streak- and scratch-free surface.

Microfiber is traditionally defined as a fiber with a denier of less than one. Denier is a measure of the thinness of a fiber and is the weight in grams of a continuous fiber of 9,000 meters. One microfiber is 100 times thinner than a single strand of human hair and ten times finer than silk. Due to its incredibly thin structure, microfiber is able to penetrate the finest, microscopic particles of dirt and grease on any surface.

When the strands are woven together, the microfibers create a surface area 40 times greater than that of a regular fiber. This expanded surface area combined with the capillary action of the fine threads dramatically enhances microfiber's absorbing power. It soaks up seven times its weight in fluids!

Unlike the rounded threads found in ordinary cloth, split microfiber, as it's technically described, possesses numerous wedge-shaped fibers. This wedge structure is what allows microfiber to penetrate grease and oil much more effectively than common fabrics. The rounded fibers on most cloths only push the dirt along the surface; the wedge-shaped microfibers actually grab the particles of grime and pull them into the dense internal structure. Dirt stays locked in the microfiber towel until it is washed.

Microfiber cloths are extremely durable and cost effective. They can be washed up to 500 times and still maintain their effectiveness. And, they're easy to care for - simply machine wash or hand wash with mild soapy water.
